Mission Statement
The Department is responsible for supervising sustainability, energy, and resilience initiatives across the municipal government and the Salem community. This includes direct management of programs and projects as well as collaboration with other Departments and local organizations.
- Engage and support Salem residents, businesses, and non-profits to participate in activities that further the goals of Resilient Together and other community goals.
- Align with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
Environmental Sustainability is the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support health and well-being, now and in the future. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines it as meeting today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Climate Resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate. Improving climate resilience involves assessing how climate change will create new or alter current climate-related risks, and taking steps to better cope with these risks.
